“When you’ve finished changing, you’re finished.” – Benjamin Franklin

"change"The world we live in is consistently evolving – everywhere, all the time, something is changing. When taking the time to really think about that, constant change seems daunting. With everything happening so quickly and suddenly, keeping up can feel impossible.

Having a routine and doing the same thing over and over again is most comfortable for many people. But without change, a person cannot grow or learn new things or get better. This is true of nearly anything in life, but stagnancy is extremely common in the workplace.

Even though dealing with change is not always easy or welcomed, benefits abound.

You have more opportunities, experience and expertise.

Being open to learning about new ideas and possibilities means you become educated on topics you might not have otherwise. You may learn a new technique to do your job or a task differently or better. You may learn about a whole new opportunity or change your career path because you learned something that changed your perspective.

You become an asset to any team, company or group.

Many people begin jobs or opportunities excited and with many ideas. If you show initiative and an interest in keeping up with new changes, this makes you even more valuable to your employer. You will continually have new skills and views to bring to the table and are more likely to be considered for promotions or new projects.

You feel uncomfortable, in a good way.

Everyone has moments when you feel nervous or uncomfortable, especially when trying something new. This rush of anticipation often happens when something is changing. But once you have made an accomplishment, learned something new, or been inspired, that nervous feeling becomes one of happiness and gratefulness that you let yourself be uncomfortable in order to be better.

Making changes to routines and habits at work may feel overwhelming, but change benefits each individual and the company as a whole. Constantly learning, and transforming practices and workflows to be most efficient and effective, allows for consistent improvement and accomplishment.

Never before has it been as important to provide employees an optimal digital work environment. And never before has it been so confusing to do so. As a Chief Human Resource Officer you want to provide inviting, efficient and fulfilling employee experiences. As a Chief Technology Officer you want technology that is extensible and provides flexibility for business changes. As a Chief Communication Officer you need channels that break through digital noise and enable effective and efficient bi-directional communication with employees. As Chief Financial Officer you want a comprehensive solution and commercial model that comes at a low financial impact and ultimately pays for itself. And as employees we want to be able to do our jobs in a frictionless, effective manner with tools that have the same style and ease of use that we have become accustomed to in our personal lives. The good news is that enterprise technologies, social constructs and many work cultures have evolved to the point where all of this is possible. The challenge is evaluating the seemingly endless technology and process options to make this a reality for any one company. This blog is my attempt to share what I have learned working with Global 2000 companies over the last 26 years to solve various instantiations of these same challenges. I do not have all of the answers, and I fully suspect that through the process of researching, talking to others and writing, I will likely learn as much as anyone who reads these posts.
